This proposal partners the universities of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez (UPRM) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) to create richer educational and research opportunities for Hispanic students in Materials Science and Engineering and, thereby, increase their representation in the Materials community. It will also provide a strong research underpinning for the first Puerto Rican graduate degree in Materials Science and Engineering, which has been proposed at UPRM.

The proposed research will focus on three thrust areas: Spintronics and Nanostructured Magnetic Materials, Nanocomposite Synthesis and Characterization, and MgB2 Superconductor Development via Improved Syntheses and Processing. The project will cover, therefore, a breadth of relevant new materials and phenomena that will appeal to a wide range of UPRM students. Those areas are intimately connected with various aspects of the UW Materials Research Science & Engineering Center and the UW Nanoscale Interdisciplinary Research Team. This grant became the first of its level and impact in UPRM targeting the strategic area of Nanotechnology.

The educational components are entwined with the creation of a Materials Science & Eng. graduate program at UPRM and the promotion of MSE amongst Hispanic students, grossly underrepresented in this field. The existence of successful materials researchers at UPRM linked with their high-level UW partners will create in Puerto Rico a hub for research on advanced materials to be recognized nationwide. This research and education synergistic partnership will serve as a model to foster similar endeavors coupling reputable research universities with minority-serving institutions throughout the US.
