UPRM PREM Students Obtain Grant in National Competition

In late March 2006 the ASM Materials Education Foundation gave the UPRM Material Ad-vantage Student Chapter a grant for their proposal titled “Fostering Awareness on Materi-als Science in Hispanic Schools.” The Foundation only funded three of the 15 proposals received from different Material Advantage Chapters.

In the proposal the UPRM Chapter plans to establish materials science clubs in intermedi-ate (middle) public schools of the Mayagüez District by fostering interest and enthusiasm among school students and teachers. In addition the Chapter will bring demonstrations into the classroom to promote the knowledge of Material Science and Engineering. The Chap-ter will also facilitate contacts between those new materials clubs with regional companies looking for sponsorship to guarantee the support of clubs in the future. All those activities will take place in conjunction with the ongoing PREM outreach schedule.

The UPRM Chapter, the first materials professional chapter in Puerto Rico, was formal-ized in 2004 under the auspices of the UPRM/UW PREM program. Most Chapter mem-bers are also PREM students. Current Chapter officers are Ruth Hidalgo (President), Lu-vina Reyes (Vice-President) and Sandra Pedraza (Activities Coordinator and Acting Secre-tary).
